Chief Minister Sukhu directs dairy federation reforms and unveils new support measures for regional farmers.
Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu convened a high-level review of the state’s cooperative dairy body, Milkfed, emphasizing the need to strengthen its operational performance and economic impact for dairy producers. Sukhu’s directives focused on modernizing procurement systems, improving quality control and boosting market activity across all Milkfed plants, signaling a strategic push to elevate the federation’s competitiveness and farmer support.
Among the infrastructure priorities reviewed was the construction of the Dhangwar milk plant, which Sukhu highlighted as a key project that will deliver economic support to farmers in multiple districts, including Kangra, Hamirpur, Chamba and Una. Sukhu underscored the importance of filling all essential operational posts within Milkfed to ensure smooth functioning of processing facilities and affiliated milk bars statewide.
In a significant policy move, the government announced enhanced Minimum Support Prices (MSP) for raw milk: cow milk will receive an MSP increase from ₹32 to ₹51 per litre, while buffalo milk MSP rises from ₹47 to ₹61 per litre. These adjustments are designed to improve farm-gate returns for dairy producers amid fluctuating market conditions and rising input costs.
Transport subsidies were also expanded: the per-litre payment for milk transport has doubled from ₹1.50 to ₹3, with an additional ₹3 per litre given to farmers who deliver milk themselves to collection centres located beyond two kilometres. Officials noted that moving to an online procurement data system will enhance transparency and efficiency across the federation’s supply chain.
Further consolidation of Milkfed’s market outreach and branding were part of the Chief Minister’s vision. Sukhu asked for a review of Milkfed milk bars and insisted that high-value products like desi ghee be marketed through digital platforms such as Himira, underlining the role of modern marketing strategies in expanding the federation’s consumer reach.
