Union minister spotlights Haryana’s dominant role in national milk production and urges village cooperatives to boost exports and farmer gains.
At the 41st State-Level Livestock Exhibition in Kurukshetra, Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh underscored Haryana’s outsized influence in India’s dairy economy, noting the state alone contributes about 36 % of the country’s total milk output—roughly 125.42 million tonnes of milk annually. Singh highlighted that this production powerhouse status stems from the strong local cattle breeds and the deep commitment of livestock farmers who brought high-quality animals to the exhibition.
Addressing producers and policymakers, Singh pushed for cooperative societies in every village to better integrate producers into larger value chains and improve access to markets. He framed cooperatives as key to expanding milk exports and strengthening rural dairy enterprises, including smallholder farms that anchor India’s broader dairy economy.
The minister also placed Haryana’s dairy contribution within the national production surge, reminding audiences that India’s total output rose from 146.3 million tonnes in 2014 to about 248 million tonnes today, making the country the world’s largest milk producer. Singh attributed this growth to focused policy action, including the creation of a dedicated Ministry of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries.
Singh highlighted the livestock sector’s wider socioeconomic impact, noting that the industry now represents a ₹19 lakh crore market and supports the livelihoods of nearly 10 crore people nationally. He also pointed to the role of dairy production in women’s empowerment, reflecting how milk value chains can generate income and leadership opportunities for rural women.
On the innovation front, government initiatives like genomic chips for breed improvement, free FMD vaccinations under the National Digital Livestock Mission, and around 70 mobile veterinary clinics in Haryana aim to increase productivity and animal health. These tech-assisted strategies indicate a push toward modernizing dairy farming and addressing quality and efficiency challenges.
