Political infighting and corruption allegations erupt across major cooperatives from Baroda to Surat.
A wave of corruption scandals has engulfed Gujarat’s leading dairy cooperatives—Baroda, Mehsana, and Surat—exposing deep-seated issues of illegal operations, political feuds, and financial misconduct under BJP sway.
At Sumul Dairy in Surat, a bitter clash between Chairman Mansingh Patel and Vice Chairman Raju Pathak erupted over allegations that 25 cooperatives illegally imported milk from Maharashtra, stored it illicitly, and funneled it into Sumul via unregistered centers—sparking fines totaling ₹3.25 crore.
The scandal has become a political hot potato: Surat Congress leader Darshan Nayak has demanded a full audit, board dismissal, and criminal charges, while BJP’s top brass have reportedly summoned the Sumul leadership to Gandhinagar to mandate audits and legal action against rule-breaking societies.
Two other dairy centers have also imploded in scandal: in Baroda, BJP MLA Ketan Inamdar exposed milk accounting fraud that led to the MD’s resignation; in Mehsana’s Dudhsagar Dairy, a board meeting turned physical amid accusations of expired milk powder hoarding—signaling factional party squabbles and rampant corruption.
Once pillars of rural prosperity, Gujarat’s cooperatives now face mounting pressure as political fights, poor governance, and quality breaches erode public trust and threaten BJP’s rural dominance. The government faces intense scrutiny to reform and restore the dairy sector’s integrity.
