AIKS Demands Justice After Protest Over Milk Prices Turns Tragic.
A Gujarat dairy farmer, Ashok Choudhury from Jijva village, reportedly died earlier this month after being exposed to tear gas during a peaceful protest outside the Sabarkantha District Dairy Cooperative. This tragic incident has ignited widespread anger among the farming community and prompted the All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) to demand immediate justice and a thorough investigation into the circumstances of his death. The protest centered on a long-standing demand for dairy farmers to receive a fairer share of the cooperative’s annual surplus.
Eyewitnesses and AIKS members claim that the demonstration, held on July 14, was initially peaceful. However, police forces arrived and began dispersing the crowd using tear gas shelling and baton charges. Choudhury, who was reportedly resting inside a parked car near the protest site, became trapped as the tear gas filled his vehicle. The surrounding chaos allegedly made it impossible for him to escape, leading to him being found unconscious and later declared dead despite efforts to revive him in two different hospitals.
The AIKS has vehemently condemned the police action, calling it an “excessive use of force” that resulted in a human life being lost. They assert that the incident is indicative of a “disturbing pattern” in how legitimate farmer protests are handled. AIKS leaders, including General Secretary Vijoo Krishnan and President Ashok Dhawale, have stated that the government has a responsibility to facilitate dialogue rather than escalate conflict, especially when farmers are merely seeking their rightful dues.
Furthermore, the All India Kisan Sabha highlighted the lack of transparency in the distribution of surplus funds by the dairy cooperative. Dayabhai Gajera, President of the Gujarat Kisan Sabha, stressed that milk-producing farmers, who are the backbone of the dairy industry, are systematically excluded from decision-making processes and denied their equitable share. This systemic issue, according to AIKS, needs urgent correction to ensure fair treatment for dairy farmers and prevent future unrest.
As of July 21, Choudhury’s family had not received an official post-mortem report, nor had any local administration representatives visited them, a silence interpreted as indifference. An AIKS delegation visited the grieving family to offer solidarity and support, emphasizing that Ashok Choudhury’s death, as the primary breadwinner, is a result of deeper systemic failures. The incident underscores the ongoing struggles faced by Indian dairy farmers for fair milk procurement prices and transparent cooperative governance, drawing significant attention from the broader agribusiness and human rights communities.
