PDKV VC emphasizes conserving indigenous cattle for sustainable dairy development in Maharashtra, boosting farmer income and milk productivity.
India's Dairy Future Prioritize Indigenous Cattle

PDKV VC Urges Conservation & Promotion for Farmer Prosperity.

The Vice-Chancellor of Dr. Panjabrao Deshmukh Agricultural University (PDKV), Akola, Sharad Gadakh, has underscored the critical importance of conserving and promoting indigenous cattle breeds for the sustainable development of Maharashtra’s agricultural sector, particularly in the Vidarbha and Marathwada regions. Speaking at a ‘Special Intellectual Discussion’ hosted by PDKV, Gadakh positioned the dairy business as an indispensable partner for achieving sustainable agriculture and ensuring farmer prosperity.

Gadakh’s remarks coincided with the state’s inaugural “Pure Indigenous Cattle Breed Conservation and Promotion Day,” celebrated annually on July 22, signaling a renewed focus on native livestock genetics. He highlighted that commercial cattle rearing offers a powerful pathway to significantly boost farmers’ income by efficiently converting low-cost materials into valuable outputs such as milk, manure, and urine, alongside the production of new livestock.

Despite India’s impressive standing as one of the top five countries globally in terms of cattle population and its position as the world’s largest milk producer, a significant challenge persists: the nation’s per-animal milk productivity is less than half the global average. This stark contrast underscores the vast untapped potential within the Indian dairy industry, a point critical for dairy economics and future growth.

The Vice-Chancellor expressed confidence that with targeted improvements in nutrition, breeding programs, and management practices, livestock in India could realistically yield at least 10 liters of milk daily. Achieving this enhanced productivity would translate into substantial economic benefits for dairy farmers, dramatically improving their livelihoods and contributing significantly to the regional and national agribusiness economy.

For the international dairy community and livestock geneticists, PDKV’s call to action provides a compelling insight into India’s strategic vision for its dairy sector. It emphasizes that unlocking the full potential of indigenous cattle breeds through scientific interventions is paramount not only for increasing milk production but also for ensuring the long-term sustainability and economic viability of dairy farming in one of the world’s largest dairy-producing nations.
