Vatakara: Milk production rate in Kerala goes down from 15 to 30 percent as the temperature keeps going up. The health conditions of dairy cattle are deteriorating as well due to heat waves.

Malabar Milma reports a 15 per cent decrease in milk received from societies since the summer intensified. Other milk distribution societies also face the same issue as they encounter production loss up to 30%.

The intense heat and scarcity in cattle feed, especially green fodder and drinking water, affect the production, among other things. As temperatures soar, the immunity of dairy cattle diminishes, leaving them vulnerable to diseases such as bovine mastitis and other ailments.

Insurance aid for farmers

Malabar Milma Union initiated an insurance plan for farmers experiencing decreased dairy production in cattle due to rising temperatures. Last year, the insurance provided dairy farmers with an aid of Rs 29 lakhs. This year, the program is set to continue, covering the period from March 1 to April 30. Presently, 38,000 cows and buffaloes have been insured. The premium for one cow is Rs 110, with the union covering Rs 60 of this amount.

The insurance company has established specific temperature thresholds for various taluks. Insurance payouts will be determined by calculating the number of days the temperature exceeds these limits. Each cow can receive a maximum of Rs 2000 as insurance money. Dairy farmers are granted an extra Rs 7 per litre to account for decreased production during the summer.

Malabar Milma MD K C James stated that the insurance plan and extra payments have been a relief for dairy farmers.

How to maintain cattle during the heat?

  • The scientific methods regarding maintenance of cattle in summer should be learnt from nearby veterinary doctors.
  • Lots of drinking water should be kept in front of the cattle all the time.
  • Cattle sheds should have good ventilation and air circulation. It would be better if fans are set up in sheds.
  • Cattle should not be tied outside between 9am and 5 pm.
  • Green fodder should be provided.
  • Bathing cattle to relieve them of heat is not a good idea. It leads to an increase in humidity and thus creates tension in the animals.
