Dairy farmers in Tamil Nadu’s Erode on Friday poured milk on the road in protest seeking a price rise. The farmers are demanding a raise of Rs 7 per litre of milk procured through government-run Aavin.

The farmers have been demanding Rs 42 per litre for cow milk and Rs 51 per litre for buffalo milk. They have also demanded 50 per cent subsidy for cattle feed.

They alleged that milk producers were going to private companies due to the government’s “mismanagement”. The farmers claimed that private firms were procuring milk at Rs 45 to 47 per litre.

Meanwhile, the DMK-led government in Tamil Nadu have denied that the protests caused a shortage of milk anywhere in the state even though, in a dramatic gesture, dairy farmers emptied containers of milk on the road in Erode.

Dairy farmers in Madurai and other parts of the state too brought along their cows and demonstrated similarly on the roads.

TNMPWA, which supplies milk to Tamil Nadu Cooperative Milk Producers’ Federation Limited, popularly known as Aavin, has said it would continue the strike till an agreement was reached with the government.
