Dairy farmers in Tiruvannamalai district have raised concerns over unpaid incentives and urged the government to take immediate action.
The issue was brought up during the district-level Farmers’ Grievance Redressal Day meeting held at the Tiruvannamalai District Collector’s Office yesterday. The meeting was presided over by Collector Tharpagaraj, with farmers from various parts of the district participating and presenting their demands.
During the meeting, farmers stressed the need for the government to procure traditional rice varieties grown by local farmers. They also requested a tripartite meeting to be held regarding crop insurance. Another major concern raised was the high commission paid to middlemen when selling flowers grown in Tiruvannamalai to Bangalore. Farmers urged the government to establish a perfume factory in the district to support their livelihoods.
Additionally, farmers demanded that the Horticulture Department provide coconut, mango, and banana saplings. They also called for sugar mills to clear pending payments owed to them.
The issue of inadequate healthcare facilities was raised, with requests to upgrade all primary health centers in the district into improved government primary health centers.
The sharp decline in cassava prices, which dropped from Rs.10,000 per ton to Rs.3,000 per ton, was another major concern, and farmers urged the government to ensure fair pricing.
After hearing their grievances, Collector Tharpagaraj directed the relevant department officials to take appropriate action and also received individual petitions from farmers. The meeting was attended by District Revenue Officer I.
Rampradeepan, Tiruvannamalai Revenue Divisional Officer Rajkumar, Joint Director of Agriculture Kannagi, Personal Assistant to the District Collector (V) T. Malavizhi, Joint Registrar (Cooperative Societies) Parthipan, along with government officials, farmer representatives, and agricultural experts.
