Crackdown on dairy farms after water pollution review

Municipal corporation officials have intensified their efforts to curb pollution by dairy farmers in the Haibowal dairy complex, issuing four challans on Tuesday for unclean surroundings and improper disposal of cow dung waste. The move follows a high-level review meeting in Chandigarh to address pollution in the Buddha Dariya, chaired by local bodies minister Ravjot Singh and attended by AAP MP Balbir Singh Seechewal, MLAs, and MC officials.

Renewed Enforcement

During the meeting, officials emphasized the need for stricter enforcement against dairy owners contributing to pollution. The MC’s health branch and operations and maintenance cell have launched joint drives to maintain cleanliness and ensure compliance with waste management guidelines.

An MC official, speaking anonymously, revealed that for the past week, authorities have urged dairy farmers to dump their waste at a designated plot within the complex. Despite proximity and convenience, many farmers have ignored the directive. “Previously, the designated location was far from the dairy units, and farmers resisted. Now, even with a closer option, there’s non-compliance, leaving us no choice but to issue challans,” the official said.

Infrastructure Concerns

Effluent treatment plants (ETPs) have been installed in the dairy complex, but many units have tampered with the wastewater lines designed to connect to the ETPs. Officials said that in the absence of proper disposal, dung either enters the sewer system or flows into the Buddha Dariya, both of which are prohibited.

Continuing Action

The enforcement drive is set to continue in the coming days as officials work to mitigate pollution from dairy farms. The MC’s actions underline the pressing need to protect Ludhiana’s waterways, particularly the Buddha Dariya, from further degradation caused by the city’s poor waste management practices.
