UP government will explore 'Cow Tourism' and commercialize cow dung products to create self-reliant shelters and boost the rural economy across all districts.
Cow Tourism UP Government Eyes New Opportunities in Agri-Tourism

Uttar Pradesh plans to establish ideal, self-reliant cow shelters in every district, leveraging cow-based products and tourism to boost the rural economy.

The Uttar Pradesh (UP) government is embarking on a unique economic strategy, announcing plans to actively explore “Cow Tourism” as a means to revitalize the rural economy and ensure the financial sustainability of local cow shelters. This initiative, launched under the vision of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, aims to develop an “ideal cow shelter” in every district, simultaneously transforming these facilities into self-reliant entities and viable tourist attractions within the state’s burgeoning agri-tourism sector.

A central tenet of the program is the promotion of the commercial use of cow-based products, thereby diversifying the revenue streams of the shelters. The government plans to encourage the market utilization of cow dung, urine, milk, and ghee. This focus on value-added products derived from livestock is a strategic move to build an indigenous industry that supports sustainable livelihoods for local communities and reduces dependence on external funding for the shelters.

To drive this commercial goal, the government will extensively leverage local community organizations. Women’s self-help groups are slated to play a vital role in both the production and marketing of items derived from cow dung at the local level. This approach aims to empower local entrepreneurs and integrate them directly into the economic model of the cow shelters, ensuring job creation and the flow of additional income into the rural residential areas.

A large-scale campaign has been designated to boost demand for specific eco-friendly products, particularly around the Diwali festival. Minister for Livestock and Dairy Development, Dharampal Singh, confirmed that a major drive will promote cow dung lamps, idols, and decorative items. By making these products widely available in markets, the government seeks to encourage citizens to participate in this eco-conscious initiative and champion the spirit of “Vocal for Local” while supporting the cow-based economy.

Principal Secretary of Livestock and Dairy Development, Mukesh Meshram, has issued instructions to local officials to formulate precise, local-level plans for the full commercial utilization of cow dung and urine within the shelters. He underscored that this comprehensive strategy is designed to achieve a dual outcome: making the cow shelters completely self-reliant and simultaneously injecting significant strength into the overall rural economy of Uttar Pradesh through innovative, livestock-centric enterprises.
