Global food and agricultural giants have gathered in Shanghai for the 7th edition of the China International Import Expo. CGTN’s Wu Lei sat down with the CEO of Fonterra, Miles Hurrell, who spoke about the company’s China operations and the opportunities throughout the domestic market.
WU LEI CGTN Reporter “China is New Zealand’s largest trading partner, with dairy products around the top of the list for products imported into China. How important is the Chinese market for your business?”
MILES HURRELL CEO, Fonterra “CIIE is a showcase of China’s willingness to be open and as you say, it’s an important market for us, a very important market. And it’s great to see our products here on show, talking to our customers and our consumers and the environment to understand what’s on the front of mine. But a lot of the development talk, the innovation, might have been thought about New Zealand, but what we do is we bring it into the Chinese market. We have six application centers now around China where we adapt it for local flavors and local tastes, and we’ve got those on show here over the next few days. And so, as I say, bring those to life in the Chinese market is something that excite us, and we’re really pleased to be here.”
WU LEI CGTN Reporter “What are some of the consumption and consumer trends that you’re keeping an eye on in the Chinese market?”
WU LEI CGTN Reporter “China is entering a new phase of high-quality development focusing on innovation and sustainability. What measures has your company developed to enhance its engagement with local consumers?”
MILES HURRELL CEO, Fonterra “Your focus on sustainability and a focus on innovation are two of the key pillars of the frontier strategy, so it’s dear to our hearts, what we live and breathe every day. And so, we think we’ve got a great opportunity to bring those to life here in the Chinese market. And the pasture-based farming systems operate the way we care for our cows in New Zealand and we think that’s a great opportunity to bring that into the Chinese market along with innovation around healthy aging and focus really on nutrition and protein in the diet. And so those things together are very much aligned to the Chinese ambition.”
