Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Reviews a ₹1,433 Crore Scheme to Transform Jammu & Kashmir’s Dairy Sector.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has chaired a high-level review of the Jammu & Kashmir Dairy Processing Infrastructure Development Scheme (JKDPIDS), a major initiative aimed at revolutionizing the region’s agribusiness sector. This ambitious ₹1,433 crore project is designed to transform the J&K dairy sector from an unorganized system into a globally competitive industry. The Chief Minister stressed the urgent need to expand organized milk processing from the current 4% to at least 20% within the next seven years, a move expected to benefit over 5 lakh dairy farmers.
The scheme, implemented by the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), is based on a comprehensive plan to modernize infrastructure and operations. Key components include the establishment of 10 automated milk processing plants across 18 districts, a significant increase in milk collection and chilling capacity to 10 lakh litres per day (LLPD), and the creation of 100 milk testing laboratories. Additionally, the plan calls for the formation of 10,000 farmer-owned dairy collectives, a crucial step in organizing the industry at the grassroots level.
To ensure the project’s success, the Chief Minister has called for close inter-departmental coordination and strict adherence to timelines. He has instructed Deputy Commissioners to immediately identify and transfer land for the new processing plants, and has tasked the NDDB and the Animal Husbandry Department with expediting agreements on sexed semen production and fodder development. Furthermore, NABARD has been asked to ensure the prompt release of funds and strict financial monitoring to keep the project on track.
This infrastructure upgrade is more than just a sectoral improvement; it is framed as a catalyst for economic transformation in rural Jammu & Kashmir. The Chief Minister highlighted that the JKDPIDS is projected to significantly boost cooperative turnover and create thousands of rural and skilled jobs. The initiative is also expected to ensure the production of hygienic, export-ready milk, positioning the region’s dairy sector as a key pillar of rural prosperity and a driver of export excellence.
In his remarks, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah underscored the immense potential of dairy in J&K, urging all stakeholders to work with a sense of urgency and precision. With a clear roadmap and strong backing from various departments and organizations, this scheme is a pivotal moment for the region’s dairy economics. It represents a concerted effort to leverage the region’s agricultural strengths to create a sustainable and prosperous future for its dairy farmers and rural communities.
