The Government of India, in collaboration with the Maharashtra State Government, is making significant strides in enhancing dairying and animal husbandry in the Marathwada region through various initiatives.
The Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD) has been implementing multiple schemes, including the National Programme for Dairy Development (NPDD), Rashtriya Gokul Mission (RGM), and National Livestock Mission (NLM), among others, to improve milk production, strengthen infrastructure, and boost farmers’ income.
One of the key projects, the Vidarbha and Marathwada Dairy Development Project (VMDDP), launched in 2016, has expanded from collecting 175 kg of milk on its first day to 4.50 lakh kg/day today, covering 3,411 villages and benefiting 35,000 farmers. So far, ?2,303.26 crore has been directly transferred to farmers’ bank accounts. Additionally, 273 Artificial Insemination (AI) centres have been established under the Rashtriya Gokul Mission, producing nearly 21,000 genetically superior calves.
In a major boost to dairy infrastructure, Mother Dairy Fruit & Vegetable Pvt. Ltd. (MDFVPL) has set up milk procurement networks in four Marathwada districts, including Nanded, covering 247 villages. With 187 milk pooling points, 15 bulk milk coolers, and one milk chilling center, the initiative ensures farmers receive a fair price for their milk.
The Maharashtra government is also implementing the “Supply of Milch Animals” program and has undertaken extensive vaccination drives to safeguard livestock. Under the National Livestock Mission – Entrepreneur Development Scheme (NLM-EDP), eight silage manufacturing projects have been sanctioned, with a total cost of ?682.19 lakh and a subsidy of ?320.47 lakh.
These initiatives reflect the government’s commitment to strengthening dairy farming and livestock management, ensuring higher productivity, better earnings for farmers, and a robust dairy ecosystem in Marathwada.
