A major fake paneer racket in Bihar saw genuine paneer priced at ₹400 sold at ₹80, raising food safety and dairy adulteration concerns.
Bihar’s Fake Paneer Scam 400 Cheese Sold at 80

A massive counterfeit paneer racket in Bihar highlights food fraud and safety risks in India’s dairy value chain.

Authorities in Bihar uncovered what’s being called one of the state’s largest fake paneer rackets, where blocks of paneer — normally retailing around ₹400 per kilogram — were being supplied for as low as ₹80 per kilogram. The discovery has raised major food safety and consumer protection concerns across regional supply chains, from wholesalers to street vendors and caterers.

The racket reportedly operates on an industrial scale, with agents boasting the capacity to supply up to 12,000 kilograms of paneer in three hours to food businesses across multiple states. The unusually low price point — far beneath authentic paneer made from milk — flagged the products as suspect and triggered investigations by local food safety authorities.

Fake or analogue paneer is typically made not from milk but from a mixture of starches, palm or vegetable oils, milk powder and chemical whiteners, giving it a semblance of cottage cheese while significantly reducing production costs. These industrial substitutes are nutritionally inferior and can pose health risks if consumed regularly, according to food safety experts.

Across India, food safety departments have clamped down on similar operations, seizing adulterated dairy products including paneer, milk and other processed items as part of ongoing enforcement drives. These widespread raids reveal that fake paneer and other adulterated dairy products continue to infiltrate markets due to weak regulation and consumer demand for cheaper alternatives.

The Bihar case underscores broader challenges for public health and dairy sector integrity, as cheap counterfeit paneer not only cheats buyers financially but also risks undermining trust in the dairy supply chain. Strengthened food safety monitoring, traceability and enforcement are being called for to protect consumers and uphold standards in both local and inter-state dairy markets.
