Opposition flags alleged cronyism in dairy subsidies, citing ministerial links and Gir cow misallocation.

The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee has escalated protests across key districts, including Guwahati, Golaghat, and Baksa, accusing the state government of irregularities in its dairy and allied sector schemes. They spotlight alleged favoritism in a Rs 25.5 crore subsidy program and the distribution of Gir cows via the NDDB‑backed Garukhuti project.

Central to the controversy is the involvement of ministerial family members: cabinet minister Jayanta Malla Baruah’s wife reportedly benefited from company-linked subsidies, acquiring 20 Gir cows under the scheme. Congress alleges that up to 90 Gir cows bypassed the Garukhuti project and were distributed to MLAs and their affiliates.

Documents obtained via RTI reveal that out of 300 Gir cows sanctioned for Garukhuti, only 210 reached their intended destination. Of those, 56 died and the remaining 154 were returned, leaving no livestock for the original project. Congress cites these figures as evidence of mismanagement and misuse of public funds.

Opposition leader Gaurav Gogoi has appealed to Prime Minister Modi, demanding a high-level inquiry and transparency in beneficiary selection. He emphasizes the need to scrutinize the alleged diversion of resources intended for rural dairying into politically connected hands.

The Assam PCC questions why, in contrast to the swift SIT investigations seen in other political cases, no similar probe has been ordered here. They’re calling for accountability, alleging that politically motivated allocation of valuable dairy assets undermines development and public trust.
