Dairy giant Amul leverages cooperative network to diversify into salt, boosting income for Gujarat saltpan workers.
On the fourth anniversary of India’s Ministry of Cooperation, Home Minister Amit Shah announced that Amul—India’s renowned dairy cooperative—will now also produce and sell salt, marking a strategic diversification beyond milk products. The initiative aims to uplift Gujarat’s saltpan workers by channeling cooperative transparency and digital innovation.
Shah inaugurated the Sardar Patel Cooperative Dairy Federation Limited, highlighting its role in building a “complete cycle” in the dairy sector—from market linkage and input support to fair milk purchase and a circular economy.
The Union Cooperation Minister framed this move within broader sector reforms, citing over 200,000 Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS), the establishment of the Tribhuvan Cooperative University, and new dairy cooperatives—all aimed at strengthening cooperative business models.
Shah urged stakeholders to embrace the ‘five P’s’—people, PACS, platforms, policy, and prosperity—underscoring the role of digital infrastructure and transparent governance in democratizing cooperative growth.
This strategic expansion into salt leverages Amul’s vast network and robust brand reputation, offering new income streams to rural communities and reinforcing the cooperative ethos that defined India’s White Revolution.
