Amul’s Global Expansion Success in the US & the Road to Europe India’s Dairy Powerhouse

Amul, a brand synonymous with India’s dairy success, continues to make strides both domestically and internationally. Under the leadership of Jayen Mehta, Managing Director of Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd (GCMMF), Amul’s recent launch of milk in the United States has been highly successful.

This milestone paves the way for the brand to enter the European market, marking a historic moment in its global expansion. Amul’s success story is deeply tied to India’s dairy transformation. From being a milk-deficient nation post-Independence, India has become the world’s largest producer and consumer of milk.

The dairy sector is not only crucial to the economy but also serves as a lifeline for millions of rural households. Central to this journey is the cooperative model introduced by Dr. Verghese Kurien, known as the “Milkman of India.” His vision empowered rural dairy farmers and revolutionized milk production, leading to the creation of a robust supply chain that is now the backbone of India’s dairy industry. Amul’s scale reflects this success.

The brand’s turnover stands at an impressive ₹80,000 crore, and it is ranked as the strongest dairy and food brand globally, a remarkable feat for a cooperative owned by 3.6 million farmers. Despite India’s dairy production reaching over 230 million tonnes in 2022-23, challenges remain.

Productivity is a major concern, as Indian cows yield significantly less milk than their counterparts in the US.

The average milk yield of crossbred cows in India is 8.52 litres per day, compared to 30 litres in the US. This productivity gap, coupled with rising feed costs, has led to supply-demand imbalances, driving milk prices up by 15% over the past year. Experts emphasize the need for a “White Revolution 2.0” to address these challenges. Modern technologies like embryo transfer and sex-sorted semen could improve breeding outcomes and boost milk yields.

Enhancing animal nutrition through silage cultivation is also essential to ensure sustainable growth. Collaborative efforts between the government, cooperatives, and private sector are crucial for long-term success. Amul’s international success, alongside India’s growing dairy potential, underscores the possibility of further expansion.

As India aims to produce one-third of the world’s total milk in the coming years, overcoming productivity challenges will be vital to maintaining this momentum.
