Gujarat co-op rolls out AI-powered assistant to deliver real-time dairy insights to 36 lakh milk producers.
Digital pivot for dairy: Amul, the Gujarat cooperative dairy giant, has launched ‘Sarlaben’, an AI-powered virtual assistant designed to deliver real-time, personalized support to dairy farmers and milk producers across more than 18,500 villages in Gujarat. The initiative was formally inaugurated by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel as part of the cooperative’s broader digital transformation strategy.
Data-driven expertise at scale: The platform taps into one of India’s most structured dairy datasets, including over 200 crore annual milk procurement transactions, veterinary records for nearly 3 crore cattle, and data on about 70 lakh artificial inseminations annually. Integrated with satellite-assisted fodder mapping, this infrastructure ensures that the AI delivers personalized recommendations on cattle care, nutrition, disease prevention, breeding and relevant government schemes.
Inclusive access and language support: Sarlaben is accessible through the Amul Farmer app, already used by more than 10 lakh members, and via voice calls for feature phone users, expanding reach into rural areas with limited connectivity and basic devices. The system supports multilingual guidance, a priority for farmers relying on local languages to make day-to-day operational decisions.
Integration with existing systems: The AI assistant is linked with Amul’s Automatic Milk Collection System (AMCS) and the Pashudhan app, giving farmers insight that reflects both their milk production data and animal health histories. This integration helps producers improve productivity and disease management, key drivers of income in village-level dairy economies.
Economic and sector impact: For the international dairy sector, Amul’s AI rollout represents a significant case of agritech adoption at cooperative scale, blending decades of operational data with modern predictive analytics. By enhancing access to verified information and improving decision-making, Sarlaben could serve as a model for AI-enabled extension services in other emerging dairy markets.
