During the raid, officials reportedly seized massive quantities of adulterated milk and synthetic milk powder stored in sacks, intended for mixing with natural milk.

In a major crackdown on food adulteration, the Jagatsinghpur district administration has unearthed a large-scale fake milk production and supply racket at Balisahi under Tarasahi area.

Acting on a tip-off and mounting complaints from locals, a five-member enforcement team led by the Sub-Collector of Jagatsinghpur and the District Food Safety Officer conducted a surprise raid on a local milk storage and mixing unit.

During the raid, officials reportedly seized massive quantities of adulterated milk and milk powder stored in sacks, intended for mixing with natural milk.

According to preliminary findings, the milk was being procured from local farmers and then mixed with powdered substances to increase volume and fat content — thereby making it appear thick and rich like pure milk.

Sasmita Das, Food Safety Officer said, “ On Collector’s instruction, we had conducted a raid on a milk unit whose work was supposed to collect milk from the village and supply in counters after chilling. As we have found milk dry powder was found in nearby house, we are considering it as adulteration.”

Adulterated Milk Supplied To OMFED?

Authorities revealed that the adulterated milk was allegedly being supplied to OMFED (Odisha State Cooperative Milk Producers’ Federation). The dairy trader involved had been operating the illegal business discreetly for a long time, allegedly earning large profits at the cost of public health.

Officials suspect that the adulteration process had been ongoing for several months and might have links to other such units in the district. The alleged use of powders in milk not only violates food safety norms but also poses severe health risks, particularly for children and elderly consumers.

All seized materials have been sent for laboratory testing, and samples of the adulterated milk are being examined to determine the exact chemical composition and potential health hazards. A detailed probe has been launched to trace the entire supply network and identify the people involved, informed an official.

This incident has sparked widespread outrage among residents, who are now demanding regular checks on milk quality and stronger enforcement mechanisms to prevent such malpractices in the future.

No comments could be obtained from OMFED officials in connection with the allegations.
