Tamil Nadu dairy co-op to churn ice cream and fermented drinks locally, expanding value-added dairy output and regional supply.

Aavin’s Tiruchy District Milk Producers’ Cooperative Union is poised to begin production at its new ice cream and fermented dairy plant in Kottapattu, Tamil Nadu, following successful trial runs of ice cream manufacturing and the initiation of trial runs for lassi, curd and buttermilk products. The facility, built under India’s Dairy Processing and Infrastructure Development Fund, represents a capital investment of ₹21.57 crore and underscores the cooperative’s push into value-added dairy processing.

Equipped with infrastructure capable of processing up to 16 lakh litres of product daily, the unit is designed to produce around 6,000 litres of various ice cream formats—cups, cones, and candy styles—alongside approximately 10,000 litres of fermented dairy goods packaged in cups and packets. Local consumers in Tiruchy and surrounding districts can expect access to these products once commercial operations begin.

The Tiruchy cooperative sources about 5.20 lakh litres of milk per day from its 54,000 members across 573 societies spanning Tiruchy, Ariyalur and Perambalur districts. Of this daily procurement, roughly 1.5 lakh litres is distributed within Tiruchy district, with the balance sent to larger hubs such as Chennai for processing and sale.

Prior to the plant’s commissioning, value-added products including ice cream, paneer, butter, ghee, curd and sweets were transported from Madurai and Chennai to roughly 15 parlours across Tiruchy. Local production is set to cut transit reliance and strengthen product availability in the cooperative’s home market.

Aavin officials, including General Manager N Muthumari, note that civil works and machinery installation began in 2023 and are now complete, with production trials underway. Beyond Tiruchy, distribution plans include sending products to neighboring districts such as Karur, Pudukottai, Dindigul, Thanjavur and Mayiladuthurai, signaling broader regional market ambitions.
