New milk cooperatives, higher procurement prices and expanded collection networks are driving growth in one of India’s fastest-rising dairy states.
Madhya Pradesh is intensifying efforts to strengthen its dairy sector, with the state government positioning milk production as a key driver of rural prosperity. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav said the strategy aims to raise incomes for farmers and cattle owners by improving milk collection, expanding dairy infrastructure and strengthening the cooperative system.
A central goal is to connect 50% of the state’s villages to the milk collection network. To support that expansion, authorities have created 381 new milk cooperative societies, bringing nearly 9,500 additional milk producers into the formal dairy economy. The move is expected to improve market access for smallholders and increase the flow of milk into organized processing channels.
The state is also focusing on increasing farmgate returns. Madhya Pradesh has raised milk procurement prices by between Rs 2.5 and Rs 6 per litre, a measure that has already delivered stronger milk collection results in major producing regions such as Jabalpur and Gwalior. Higher prices are intended to encourage greater milk production and improve profitability for dairy farmers.
Alongside price incentives, the government is investing in productivity and herd quality. Officials highlighted ongoing programs to improve dairy cattle breeds, establish model farms and expand the reach of the state-owned Sanchi milk brand. A new Heifer Rearing Centre under the Bhopal Milk Union has also been launched to support better genetics and future milk output.
The broader objective is to build a more integrated dairy value chain capable of supporting long-term rural development. By linking more villages, strengthening cooperatives and increasing production efficiency, Madhya Pradesh hopes to create a larger and more competitive dairy industry that benefits both farmers and processors across the state.
