ADB-backed initiative in Indonesia helps women entrepreneurs expand dairy distribution and strengthen rural livelihoods.
A door-to-door dairy distribution initiative in Indonesia is creating new economic opportunities for women while strengthening access to fresh milk in local communities. Supported by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the program empowers women entrepreneurs to sell and deliver dairy products directly to households, helping bridge gaps in the country’s dairy supply chain. The initiative is designed to expand market access while improving livelihoods in rural and peri-urban areas.
Through the program, women receive training, equipment and financial support to operate small dairy distribution businesses. Participants sell milk and dairy products within their neighborhoods, creating reliable income streams while increasing the availability of nutritious dairy foods for local consumers. The model also helps build entrepreneurial skills and financial independence for women involved in the dairy value chain.
Indonesia’s dairy sector is characterized by relatively low domestic milk production compared with national consumption. As a result, improving distribution systems and encouraging local dairy market development are key priorities for strengthening the industry. The door-to-door sales approach provides an innovative way to connect producers, processors and consumers more effectively.
For many participants, the initiative has transformed household economics by creating stable business opportunities. Women distributors are able to generate daily income while contributing to the growth of local dairy markets. The program also promotes community engagement and encourages greater awareness of dairy nutrition among consumers.
The project highlights how inclusive development programs can strengthen agricultural value chains while promoting gender equality. By supporting women-led microenterprises in dairy distribution, the initiative not only improves milk accessibility but also demonstrates the potential for grassroots innovation to drive growth in emerging dairy economies.
