Purabi Dairy Expands into Barak Valley Market
The inauguration was attended by ministers for Animal Husbandry and Veterinary, and Barak Valley Development, NDDB representatives, MPs, MLAs, local officials, and farmers.

New Silchar milk processing plant strengthens Assam’s dairy infrastructure and boosts local supply.

Purabi Dairy has formally extended its footprint into Assam’s Barak Valley with the inauguration of a renovated milk processing plant in Gungoor, Silchar, marking a significant milestone for organised dairying in southern Assam. The launch represents a shift from informal milk handling towards structured collection and processing, a development welcomed by producers and regional stakeholders.

The Silchar facility — revived from a previously defunct dairy plant — was officially opened in a ceremony attended by senior officials including the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Minister Krishnendu Paul and representatives from the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB). Such high-level engagement underscores the strategic importance of this dairy expansion for the state’s agricultural agenda.

The refurbished plant is expected to produce fresh, hygienically processed milk for the local Barak Valley population, replacing a market that largely depended on loose or UHT milk. By introducing reliable chilling and packaging infrastructure, Purabi Dairy aims to improve product quality, extend shelf life and strengthen consumer confidence in locally processed dairy.

Local dairy farmers and cooperative members are set to benefit from improved milk procurement channels. The plant’s operations will enhance supply chain efficiency and create new market opportunities for producers in and around Silchar, aligning with broader goals to integrate rural suppliers into organised dairy value chains under a cooperative model.

For dairy industry analysts and agribusiness investors, Purabi Dairy’s entry into the Barak Valley signals both infrastructure enhancement and market development potential in a region with growing demand for quality liquid milk. The plant may also serve as a foundation for future expansions as part of Assam’s statewide dairy growth strategy.
