Independent lab finds high bacterial counts in Amul, Mother Dairy & Country Delight pouch milk, sparking food safety debate.
A recent independent investigation by Trustified, an India-based lab testing initiative, has put several of the country’s most widely consumed packaged milk brands under scrutiny, reporting that samples from Amul, Mother Dairy and Country Delight significantly exceeded microbiological safety standards. The analysis focused on Total Plate Count (TPC) and coliform bacteria levels, key dairy quality and hygiene indicators used to assess whether milk is free from harmful contamination.
According to the findings, Mother Dairy cow milk recorded a TPC of roughly 240,000 CFU/ml — nearly eight times above the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) limit of 30,000 CFU/ml — raising concerns about potential hygiene lapses during production or distribution. Meanwhile, Country Delight cow milk showed a TPC of 60,000 CFU/ml, about double the safety threshold despite its “farm-to-home” freshness messaging.
In the case of Amul pouch milk, the issue centered on elevated coliform bacteria counts, with variants like Amul Taaza recording high CFU levels well above FSSAI’s prescribed limits, signaling possible contamination or cold-chain breakdowns. Coliform presence in pasteurized milk doesn’t always implicate harmful pathogens directly, but it is broadly viewed in dairy science as a marker for sanitation and processing integrity that requires industry attention.
The controversy has rekindled broader questions around packaged milk safety, cold chain management, and food quality assurance in India’s dairy sector. Trustified’s report additionally highlighted concerns beyond milk, noting earlier findings of elevated coliform and yeast counts in Amul curd products, suggesting systemic gaps rather than isolated incidents. Amul has publicly refuted these test results, maintaining that its products comply with FSSAI standards, while the national food regulator has yet to issue official findings on this specific report.
For global dairy analysts and supply chain professionals, these results underscore the importance of microbiological quality control, effective heat treatment and cold chain management — especially for high-consumption staple products — to protect consumer trust and public health.
