Samajwadi Party chief demands a ‘white paper’ on alleged corruption and neglect of Parag milk plants, contrasting it with Amul’s global cooperative success.
Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav has launched a direct political attack on the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Uttar Pradesh, leveling accusations of widespread corruption and mismanagement within the state’s crucial dairy sector. Yadav utilized social media to contrast the BJP’s alleged failings with the internationally recognized success of Amul (GCMMF), which was recently ranked as the World’s No. 1 Cooperative in the World Cooperative Monitor Report 2025 by the International Cooperative Alliance and EURICSE.
The core of the SP leader’s demand is for the BJP government to issue a “white paper” detailing the state of the white milk sector. This document, he argued, is necessary to expose what he terms the “malice and corruption” that has significantly damaged Parag milk plants, the country’s oldest dairy and a vital asset in India’s largest milk-producing state. He claims that the poor condition of these plants is “no secret to anyone.”
Yadav specifically cited his previous administration’s investment strategy to highlight the current government’s alleged inaction. He reminded the public that his government had allocated a substantial budget of Rs 2,000 crore for establishing new Parag plants and renovating existing facilities. He then explicitly called for a public accounting to show “how much the BJP government has misused that fund,” tying the current state of the plants directly to fiscal corruption.
The SP chief also defended his own government’s approach to the dairy industry, noting that they had actively promoted healthy competition by providing space for Amul plants to enter Uttar Pradesh. By doing so, he claims his administration fostered a competitive market environment. In his concluding remarks, Yadav widened his criticism, stating that the BJP is not only “anti-farmer” but also specifically “anti-milk farmer,” positioning the dairy crisis as an issue of economic neglect against the agricultural community.
The political clash over the cooperative dairy sector occurs against a backdrop of national pride over the success of Indian cooperatives. Days before Yadav’s accusation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah publicly congratulated both Amul and Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Limited (IFFCO) for securing the top two spots among the world’s leading cooperatives, celebrating their success as a “global model of empowerment and self-reliance” and a testament to the sector’s “vibrant” potential.
