Parag Dairy in Gorakhpur will be revived by Feb 2026 under NDDB operation. The 1 lakh litre/day plant aims to boost eastern UP milk producers.
Minister Vows to Revive Defunct Dairy Plant by Feb 2026

Uttar Pradesh’s Animal Husbandry Minister targets the long-shut Gorakhpur Parag Dairy for a major cooperative dairy sector overhaul and farmer benefit.

The defunct Parag Dairy unit in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, is set for a major revitalization, with a targeted return to operation by February 2026. This announcement was made by Dharampal Singh, the state’s Minister for Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development. The minister explicitly laid blame on the previous Samajwadi Party (SP) government for the unit’s closure, which had been non-functional since 2023, citing negligence and inaction as the primary causes for its deterioration and eventual shutdown.

The revival effort is a key component of the current Yogi Adityanath government’s strategy to strengthen the broader dairy sector for local farmers and milk producers. The Gorakhpur plant boasts a significant processing capacity of over one lakh litres per day. Restoring this capacity is expected to generate fresh economic opportunities and directly benefit milk producers across eastern Uttar Pradesh, simultaneously restoring confidence among members of the local cooperative dairy societies.

To ensure a successful and sustainable restart, the plant will be operated by the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB). Officials from the Dairy Development Department have confirmed that a technical assessment of the facility is already underway. Furthermore, the necessary infrastructural upgrades are scheduled for completion soon, with active coordination taking place with cooperative societies to guarantee a smooth transition back to operational status.

A key deadline has been established for the resumption of supply procurement: milk procurement will restart before the next financial year. This timeline is critical to reassure local dairy farmers that a reliable market for their product is being rapidly re-established. The commitment underscores the political will to rectify the past failures and inject life back into a crucial regional processing hub.

Minister Singh also contextualized the dairy revival within the government’s broader commitment to animal welfare and the dairy industry. Responding to a query, he highlighted that the state currently operates 7,713 cow shelters housing over 12.50 lakh cows. Additionally, 171 large cow shelters are under construction, demonstrating a concerted effort by the administration to strengthen the foundation of the state’s dairy infrastructure alongside the processing capabilities.
