Himachal Pradesh invests Rs 225 crore in the fully automated Dhagwar facility, promising a major economic boost for milk producers.

The global dairy community should take notice of a significant infrastructure development in Himachal Pradesh, India, where the upcoming Dhagwar milk plant is set to become the state’s most advanced dairy processing facility. Valued at Rs 225 crore (approximately $27 million USD), this fully automated plant is being engineered to operate strictly in accordance with international standards for quality, hygiene, and efficiency. This investment signals a strong governmental commitment to modernizing the regional dairy sector and implementing high-tech solutions in milk production and value addition.

A key metric for the scale of this project is its robust processing capacity, set at one lakh litres of milk per day. This capacity is designed to support the local agricultural economy by handling substantial volumes while enabling the production of a diverse and lucrative portfolio of value-added dairy products. Once operational, the facility will produce essential commodities like toned, double-toned, standard, and full-cream milk, alongside specialized items such as khoya, yogurt, lassi, paneer, and high-value mozzarella cheese and flavored milk.

Beyond its technical specifications, the Dhagwar plant is positioned as a critical tool for regional economic empowerment. Agriculture Minister Chander Kumar emphasized that the project is intended to be a milestone in substantially enhancing the income of milk producers and creating vital employment opportunities for rural youth. By promoting modern technology and value addition in animal husbandry, the initiative aligns with a broader governmental vision aimed at making local farmers and livestock owners self-reliant and economically empowered.

The plant’s construction progress currently stands at 41 per cent physical completion. Due to the project’s strategic importance, the Minister has directed officials to accelerate the remaining work while strictly maintaining high construction and operational standards. A Chief Engineer-level officer has been appointed to the project monitoring committee to strengthen oversight and ensure the timely and efficient delivery of this crucial dairy infrastructure.

Furthermore, this dairy project is supported by substantial government procurement initiatives designed to incentivize local production. The state is actively purchasing cow milk at Rs 50 per litre and buffalo milk at Rs 61 per litre, creating a stable, high-value market for raw materials. This strong procurement system, combined with the new processing capabilities, reflects a comprehensive commitment to ensuring long-term prosperity and sustainable growth for the region’s dairy farmers and the overall rural economy.
