Ex-Software Engineer Aseem Rawat Defies Conventional Wisdom, Scales Hetha Organic to 1,100 Cows and 130 Products in a Major Agribusiness Shift.

A powerful shift in career trajectory has positioned Aseem Rawat, a former software engineer, as a leading dairy entrepreneur and a champion of indigenous cow breeds in India. After 14 years in the well-paid IT sector, Rawat left his job to establish Hetha Organic in December 2015, driven by a deep conviction to prove the profitability of desi cows—a belief contrary to the conventional dairy economics favoring foreign or hybrid breeds. His bold move demonstrates the entrepreneurial potential within niche agribusiness models.

The catalyst for Rawat’s dramatic career change was a televised debate questioning the viability of indigenous cows in modern dairy farming due to lower milk production. Determined to prove that a successful business could be built on Indian tradition, Rawat overcame initial family concerns and a total lack of a fixed income. He launched Hetha Organic, an enterprise focused on the promotion of indigenous cow breeds and the production of pure and medicinal milk and dairy products, aiming to transform agriculture-based tradition into a lucrative business model.

Today, Hetha Organic has exploded in scale, becoming a well-recognized brand with an annual turnover exceeding ₹10 crore (100 million rupees). The operation now manages over 1,100 indigenous cows across five farm locations in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. This significant expansion is supported by a robust team of over 110 employees, including farm workers, production staff, and marketing experts, establishing the company as a major regional player and promoter of rural employment.

Hetha Organic’s success is built on specialized livestock management, focusing on four high-quality indigenous breeds: Gir, Tharparkar, Sahiwal, and Badri. While the breeds offer varied benefits—from the Gir’s good milk quantity to the Badri’s rich medicinal properties—the company’s commitment to quality has been key. Rawat successfully addressed the challenge of convincing customers to pay a premium for milk and products that offer enhanced health benefits, utilizing his background to develop a robust nationwide sales network.

Ultimately, Rawat’s journey, which has been validated by numerous accolades, including the National Gopal Ratna Award, offers crucial lessons for the international dairy community on diversification and value addition. Hetha Organic now manufactures over 130 natural products, sold both on its dedicated website and major e-commerce platforms like Amazon and Flipkart. Rawat’s future plan involves expanding the variety of products by adding more indigenous breeds, solidifying his deep belief in the profitability of Indian organic dairy.
