French Giant Expands Wuxi Plant with Fully Automated Lines to Scale Medical Nutrition Production and Solidify “In China, for China and the World” Strategy.

French food and beverage powerhouse Danone is significantly scaling up its operations in China, marking a new phase of growth for its medical nutrition business with the expansion of the Danone Nutricia plant in Wuxi, East China’s Jiangsu province. This investment centers on adding fully automated sterilization and advanced intelligent production lines, specifically designed to boost the manufacturing of enteral nutrition products. The move underscores Danone’s profound confidence in China’s dynamic, innovation-driven market and is a key pillar of its global “Renew Danone” strategy.

The expansion project directly aligns with China’s comprehensive public health strategy, Healthy China 2030, which aims to improve national health outcomes. The specialized nutrition products produced at the Wuxi facility, including both enteral nutrition and supporting medical devices, are critical for consumers dealing with conditions such as oncology, stroke recovery, digestive health, and elderly care. By leveraging nearly 130 years of expertise in specialized nutrition, Danone is actively contributing to addressing both current and future global health needs through science-based and consumer-focused innovation.

Danone views China not only as a crucial market but as a global manufacturing engine. Vikram Agarwal, COO of Danone, stated that the upgraded Wuxi facility will now rank among Danone’s most advanced worldwide, deploying leading-edge solutions in digital manufacturing. This advanced capacity is essential for strengthening the resilience of the company’s supply chain in China and enhancing its ability to deliver high-quality products with greater consistency and efficiency to global markets.

The company’s commitment is encapsulated in its “in China, for China and the world” model. The Wuxi facility currently supports the production of enteral nutrition and infusion systems for the Chinese domestic market, but also serves as a critical export hub, sending products to nearly 30 countries and regions worldwide. This illustrates the plant’s strategic importance within Danone’s global supply network and China’s growing role in international specialized dairy and nutrition manufacturing.

Senior Danone leadership praised the local environment for its support and efficiency, noting that strong local collaboration was crucial to operating at “China’s speed and at China quality.” Bruno Chevot, president of Danone China, North Asia, and Oceania, highlighted that China is Danone’s second-largest market and a major engine for future growth. The utilization of the most advanced digital technologies at the Wuxi plant allows the firm to be highly efficient while simultaneously reducing energy consumption, showcasing a dual focus on growth and sustainable advanced production.
