Global Dairy Leader India hits 239 Million Tonnes, drastically increasing per capita milk supply far above the world average.
India has cemented its position as the undisputed global leader in milk production, showcasing a remarkable decade of growth within its agribusiness sector. Over the last ten years, the country’s total milk production volume has surged by a staggering over 63 percent. This massive output increase raised production from an initial 146 million tonnes to over 239 million tonnes, confirming India’s dominant role in the international dairy sector and its vital contribution to the global food supply chain. The sheer scale of this production means that India now contributes nearly a quarter of the world’s total milk supply, maintaining its firm grip on the first position globally. This exponential growth has significant economic implications, as the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying confirms the dairy sector now contributes a significant 5 percent to the national economy. This massive economic engine directly supports and employs more than 8 crore farmers, highlighting the sector’s crucial role in rural livelihoods and poverty alleviation.
Furthermore, the domestic supply of milk has dramatically improved for the nation’s vast population. The official data journalism shows that the per capita availability of milk has risen sharply, increasing by a substantial 48 percent over the past decade. This means that by the 2023-24 period, the daily availability had reached over 471 grams per person, setting a high benchmark for nutrition.
When viewed from a perspective of international dairy economics, India’s achievement in per capita availability is particularly notable. At over 471 grams per person daily, the country’s current milk supply rate is significantly greater than the current world average. The global average stands at approximately 322 grams per person a day, showcasing the success of India’s policies and investment in dairy development.
The continued, rapid expansion of India’s dairy output provides an optimistic outlook for both domestic food security and the global market. The sustained double-digit growth rate and the increased per capita availability underscore the success of nationwide initiatives aimed at supporting dairy producers and improving livestock productivity, firmly establishing India as the central powerhouse of the international milk market for the foreseeable future.
