Mission Director promotes processing and branding opportunities to boost farmer incomes under Sewa Parv campaign.
Jammu and Kashmir’s dairy development leadership has launched an intensive field campaign to transform the region’s dairy sector, with Mission Director Dairy Development Er. Narinder Singh Bali conducting an extensive tour of Reasi District as part of the government’s ‘Sewa Parv’ community welfare initiative. Accompanied by Chief Animal Husbandry Officer Dr. R.K. Kaith, the high-level delegation focused on implementing comprehensive action plans designed to elevate dairy farming from subsistence-level operations to commercially viable enterprises that can drive rural economic transformation.
The mission’s core strategy centers on an awareness-cum-training camp held at the Veterinary Dispensary in Katra, specifically organized to promote dairy development initiatives and Holistic Agriculture Development Program (HADP) schemes among key stakeholders. The event brought together critical grassroots participants including Pashu Shakis (livestock coordinators), A-Helps (agricultural helpers), MAITRIs (community volunteers), dairy farmers, Self-Help Groups, and students, creating a comprehensive knowledge-sharing platform that ensures multi-level engagement across the dairy value chain.
Mission Director Bali emphasized the transformative potential of the dairy sector as a sustainable employment generator, urging farmers to expand beyond traditional milk production into value-added activities including processing, packaging, branding, and marketing of dairy products. This strategic shift toward vertical integration represents a fundamental change in approach for Jammu and Kashmir’s dairy industry, moving producers from price-taking commodity suppliers toward brand-building entrepreneurs who can capture higher margins throughout the value chain and reduce dependency on external markets.
Field visits to established dairy operations, including the successful unit operated by Gopal Singh at Agharjitto, provided concrete examples of best practices and demonstrated the tangible benefits available through departmental subsidy schemes. The Mission Director’s direct interaction with beneficiaries and progressive farmers served dual purposes: validating the effectiveness of current support programs while identifying opportunities for scaling successful models across the district, ensuring that proven innovations reach wider farmer networks.
The comprehensive approach extends beyond farmer education to include systematic capacity building for field staff, with Veterinary Assistant Surgeons from Panthal and Banganga participating alongside other grassroots personnel. Participants including Pashu Shakis, A-Helps, and MAITRIs received specific guidance on documenting and uploading field activities to access performance-based incentives, creating accountability mechanisms that ensure sustained engagement and measurable impact at the community level while supporting the broader goal of rural economic development.
