PONDA: The cattle feed plant of Goa Dairy which has always dragged the co-operative society into losses was shut down on 1st August and the workers at the plant were transferred to Goa Dairy.
The plant which has been shut down as of now will be handed over to the Department of Animal Husbandry and will be run on PPP-model and the process for the same is underway.
The plant was started on a ‘break even’ formula with the intention of providing good quality fodder at reasonable rates to milk producers. However, the project has only incurred losses since it began operations. After the government disqualified a majority of the board of directors, a team of administrators was appointed to the state-run society.
The 3-member administrative committee led by chairperson Parag Nagarsekar has started taking decisions in an attempt to get the Goa Dairy back on track. Shutting down the animal feed plant was the first major decision taken by the committee and around 35 workers from the plant were accommodated at the Goa Dairy’s factory at Curti.
Material worth Rs 12.30 cr required for the cattle feed plant and the amount is yet to be paid off.
There are around 200 to 250 tonnes of molasses lying unused in the plant.
During the last few months, around 37,000 litres of milk is collected from all over the State while 52,000 to 55,000 litres of milk is sold per day. More milk is bought from other states to meet the State’s demand for the milk.
