Punjab proposes a ₹372 crore Verka dairy expansion to boost milk demand, farmer incomes and rural jobs.
$45M Verka Dairy Expansion Planned in Punjab

New milk powder and fermented dairy plants aim to raise processing capacity, boost milk demand and support farmer incomes in Ferozepur.

Punjab’s dairy sector could see a major investment surge with a proposed ₹372 crore expansion of the Verka Ferozepur Dairy, aimed at strengthening milk processing capacity and improving returns for dairy farmers. The proposal was presented by Milkfed Punjab director and Ferozepur Milk Union chairman Gurbhej Singh Tibbi during a meeting with National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) chairman Manish Shah in Amritsar.

The expansion plan focuses on building new dairy processing infrastructure to absorb larger volumes of milk from the region. A central component of the project is the construction of a milk powder plant with a processing capacity of 60 metric tonnes, representing an investment of approximately ₹270 crore. The facility is expected to support dairy processors in managing seasonal milk surpluses while expanding the range of marketable dairy products.

In addition, the proposal includes a modern plant dedicated to fermented dairy products such as curd and lassi. This facility would have a processing capacity of 50 metric tonnes and an estimated cost of ₹102 crore. The project reflects growing demand in India for value-added dairy products, which are becoming an increasingly important segment of the dairy value chain.

Industry leaders say the expansion could significantly increase regional milk demand, helping secure better farmgate prices for dairy producers in the Ferozepur area. By strengthening processing infrastructure and encouraging higher milk production, the project aims to enhance the economic stability of dairy farmers and reinforce the cooperative dairy system in Punjab.

Beyond the farm sector, the investment is expected to generate between 2,000 and 3,000 jobs directly and indirectly. Officials also believe the project could stimulate broader rural development by creating employment opportunities for youth and women, improving local infrastructure and reducing migration by providing new economic opportunities within the region.
