As per the committee’s report, a hike of Rs 7-8 per litre is demanded by the dairy farmers. Only then can the farmers receive a fair amount excluding commission.

Thiruvananthapuram: Milk prices are likely to go up by more than Rs 6 per litre in the state. A committee, appointed by Milma, submitted its interim report recommending a price hike of Rs 7-8 per litre on Sunday.

The Milma union representatives will hold a meeting on Monday to discuss the price hike and will inform the government of their decision.

Recommendations by the committee Currently, a farmer receives Rs 38-40 per litre. The production cost is up to Rs 46. Hence, prices should be hiked in such a way that farmers will receive at least Rs 6 as profit.

Cattle health insurance should be implemented insurance should be implemented as the current insurance scheme is not enough.

Veterinary services should be expanded to the hinterlands. Silage production should be expanded.

Subsidy should be implemented to reduce the price of cattle fodder.

Alka Upadhyaya, Secretary of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD), stated that the milk supply in India remains stable, with the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) and Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation rates for milk recorded at 2.09 per cent and 2.85 per cent, respectively, in November 2024.
