And yet: even if our license plates didn’t remind us daily, living in America’s Dairyland remains part of our identity, even as those red barns overlooking pastures of contented cows are in danger of passing into memory. In 2019, some 800 Wisconsin dairy farmers locked the barndoors and sold their cows.
