Covid dung overflows into Ludhiana’s drain; officials enforce screens, biogas plans as dairy complex dumps waste into Buddha Nullah.
Ludhiana Dairy Waste Poses Pollution Crisis

Untreated cow dung and effluent clog waterways—community and authorities scramble to respond.

Ludhiana’s Tajpur Road dairy complex is facing a severe environmental health emergency as cow dung and dairy effluent flood roads and enter the Buddha Nullah (locally known as Buddha Dariya). Despite a ₹9 crore ETP installation and over ₹3 crore in fines, dairy waste continues to overwhelm the system, prompting protests by farmers against restrictive discharge policies.

In response to widespread dumping of solids and wastewater, municipal commissioners have initiated measures including permanent onsite oversight, deployment of mesh screens to separate dung from drainage, and contracting private firms to manage removal. These interventions mark a shift toward stricter enforcement following prolonged neglect .

A recent field inspection by the Buddha Dariya Action Front, led by activist Anita Sharma, uncovered two major pollution sources: untreated output from the ETP and direct late-night dumping from dairy units. Waste is strewn across a 1km stretch around the complex, amid chronic sanitation and encroachment issues.

Community clean-up efforts are underway, with MP Balbir Singh Seechewal driving silt removal, dung clearance in key blocks, and promoting biogas solutions. TDS monitoring shows early signs of water quality recovery, but dairy waste still poses significant challenges.

Local officials warn of persistent dumping and infrastructure blockages. With the monsoon season approaching, drainage systems remain vulnerable. Authorities are urging dairy owners to adopt cooperative models, establish central dung collection systems, and integrate biogas processing to ensure long-term environmental and public health resilience.
