Strategic import from Australia aims to strengthen domestic milk production and empower local farmers.
Indonesia has taken a significant step to bolster its domestic milk production, with the recent import of 1,573 dairy cows from Australia. The cattle arrived in two batches on June 27 and 28, 2025, marking a direct investment by the Ministry of Agriculture to enhance the productivity of local dairy farmers. For the international dairy community, this highlights a proactive national strategy to build a more robust and self-sufficient dairy sector.
This substantial import is a key component of the Indonesian government’s National Milk and Beef Production Acceleration (P2SDN) program. Director General of Livestock and Animal Health, Agung Suganda, emphasized that this initiative aims to increase the nation’s dairy cow population by an ambitious one million head by 2029. Such a target underscores a long-term commitment to agricultural self-reliance and food security.
The newly imported cows are expected to play a crucial role in empowering local farmers by enhancing their capacity for efficient milk production. This direct infusion of high-quality genetics and productive livestock is designed to accelerate Indonesia’s journey towards achieving milk self-sufficiency, reducing reliance on imports and strengthening the domestic dairy supply chain.
Ensuring the health and safety of the imported livestock was a top priority. Director of Animal Health Imron Suandy confirmed that the cows were imported under stringent animal health protocols. These rigorous measures were implemented to guarantee that the animals are healthy and completely free from any transmissible diseases, safeguarding both the existing national herd and the sustainability of the agribusiness expansion.
In essence, Indonesia’s strategic import of Australian dairy cows represents a calculated investment in its agricultural future. It reflects a comprehensive approach to stimulating growth, improving farmer capabilities, and progressing towards national milk self-sufficiency, showcasing dynamic dairy economics and a commitment to long-term food independence.
